Rajasthan, West Bengal Bypolls 2018 Schedule: Polling to be Held on January 29, Counting on February 1
The Election Commission announced that the counting for all the three Parliamentary and two Assembly constituencies will be done on February 1, 2018.
New Delhi, January 8: The Election Commission in December 2017 announced that bypolls to three Lok Sabha seats in Rajasthan and West Bengal which fell vacant following the demise of sitting members will be held on January 29, 2018. The voting will be held to elect their representatives to the Lok Sabha. The Commission announced that the counting for all the three Parliamentary and two Assembly constituencies will be done on February 1, 2018.
The Commission announced that with the announcement of bypolls, the Model Code of Conduct comes into force with immediate effect “in the district(s) in which the whole or any part of the Parliamentary/Assembly Constituency going for bye-election is included.
As per reports, the by-polls in Rajasthan are being held as the sitting MPs Sanwar Lal Jat from Ajmer and Mahant Chandnath from Alwar had passed away recently. Both the MPs were from the BJP. Similarly, the election in West Bengal is being held as Trinamool Congress MP Sultan Ahmed had died in September.
The notifications for the bypolls to the Alwar and Ajmer seats in Rajasthan and the Uluberia seat in West Bengal were issued on January 3. It has to be noted that the last date of filing nominations is January 10 and date for scrutiny is January 11. The last date of withdrawing candidatures is January 15. As per reports, bypolls to West Bengal’s Uluberia parliamentary seat and Noapara Assembly seat will also be held simultaneously.
According to PTI reports, the Election Commission did not announce the dates of the anticipated bypolls to Gorakhpur and Phulpur Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh which fell vacant in September after Adityanath became chief minister of Uttar Pradesh and Keshav Prasad Maurya his deputy after the assembly polls. The poll panel also announced bypoll to Mandalgarh (Rajasthan) and Naopara (West Bengal) assembly seats. The counting of votes will take place on 1 February.
