New Delhi, January 25: The Rajasthan assembly on Saturday passed a resolution against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Rajasthan became the third state after Kerala and Punjab to pass an assembly resolution seeking repeal of CAA. After the resolution was passed the Indian National Congress-ruled Rajasthan, several Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders shouted slogans in favour of the Citizenship Act. Earlier, Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot said that the Centre should listen to people protesting against the law and asserted that democracy will weaken if there is no dialogue. Kerala Assembly Passes Resolution to Scrap Citizenship Amendment Act in State.
"We are requesting the central government to reconsider the Act. The Constitution has given the right to protest but if someone does it, they are attacked and called anti-nationals," Pilot, who is also the president of the Pradesh Congress Committee, said on Thursday.
Kerala was the first state to pass a resolution against CAA stating that it "violates the fundamental principles of the Constitution and it has great significance." It was followed by Punjab, with Chief Minister Amarinder Singh saying that his government will not implement the law.
The amended Citizenship Act, which was passed by the Parliament on December 11, seeks to grant citizenship to Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi, and Christian communities, except Muslims, from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan who entered India before 2015 and faced religious prosecution.
