Raipur, December 11: Counting of votes in Raipur district is currently underway, along with all other parts of Chhattisgarh which went to polls in the recently contested Assembly elections 2018. The poll battle in these six constituencies – Raipur City West, Raipur City North, Raipur City South, Arang, Abhanpur, Rajim – is primarily wedged between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress and the BSP-Janta Congress alliance. Raipur City West: The BJP candidate from the seat is Rajesh Munat, who is being rechallenged by Congress' Vikas Upadhyay. In the last elections, the later had lost the seat by a margin of less than 6,000 votes. BSP has fielded Bhojraj Gaurkhede, while Uttam Jayasval is contesting on AAP’s ticket. Raipur City North: From this Assembly segment, the BJP has fielded sitting MLA Shrichand Sundrani to take on Congress' candidate Kuldeep Juneja. Amar Gidwani is contesting on Janta Congress seat, while Yogendra Sen is fighting on AAP ticket. Check here for live results for Raipur City North.
Raipur City South: Here, the BJP candidate is the sitting MLA Brijmohan Agarwal. The prime challenger is Congress leader is Kanhaiya Agrawal, replacing Dr Kiramayee Nayak who lost to Brijmohan in 2013 by over a margin of 25,000 votes. Arang (SC): In this SC constituency, a trilateral contest is expected between the ruling BJP, the Congress and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). In 2013, though BJP's Naveen Markandey won the seat in 2013, he is replaced by Sanjay Dhidhi and is contesting against Congress’ Dr Shiv Kumar Dahariya who has replaced Rudra Kumar Guru. Abhanpur: The BJP candidate from this constituency is Chandrashekhar Sahu who had lost the seat to Congress’ sitting MLA Dhanendra Sahu by a margin of 8,000 votes. Rajim: Here, the BJP had has fielded sitting MLA Santosh Upadhyay who defeated Congress’ Amitesh Shukla by a margin of 2,000 votes in 2013. However, Congress has given Shukla the ticket this time. The counting of votes is expected to conclude in the next few hours, with the Election Commission of India scheduled to declare the final results by the end of the day. In case of a BJP victory, Dr Raman Singh would continue to remain the Chief Minister of Chhattisgarh. If the Congress succeeds in routing the saffron camp, the party is expected to take a cautious decision on choosing the CM, while BSP-Janta Congress Alliance might choose Ajit Jogi as their CM candidate.
