New Delhi, July 22: Congress President Rahul Gandhi will be the Prime Ministerial candidate of the grand old party in the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections, confirmed media reports. Congress Spokesperson and head of INC Communications Department, Randeep Singh Surjewala, responding to the question as to who will be the prime ministerial face for the 2019 General Elections, said that, "Naturally, the Congress president would be the only face to be projected. The Congress would fight this election by putting forward our leader."

The Congress spokesperson, on the question of alliance, said that the Congress expected to better its performance of 2004. Surjewala said that, "Once the Congress party becomes the single largest party, touching the same magic figure of 200 or more, naturally the Congress party will be leading, and whoever else wants to come and walk hand in hand (are welcome)."

The Congress conducted the meeting of its working committee (CWC), in order to "strengthen" the party and to discuss on the topic of alliance for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, said senior Congress leader from Kashmir, Ghulam Nabi Azad.

Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh Congress chief Raj Babbar told ANI that the party committed to fight against the Bharatiya Janata Party's ideology (BJP) and save the Constitution.

"We believe that Congress party is the one which can give fight to BJP's ideology. If the RSS has ever lost to someone it is the Congress party's Idea of India. We should keep this in mind and take everyone along to save the Constitution," Babbar said.

Rahul Gandhi was also authorised by the CWC to form the election campaign committee (ECC) which enables him to make decisions and call shots on pre-poll and post-poll alliances, said AICC General Secretary and former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot. (With Agency Inputs)
