Gandhi had unsuccessfully led the Congress and allies into the general elections held in India in April-May 2019. Contesting from two constituencies, he lost from his home bastion of Amethi while won from a record-mandate from Kerala's Wayanad.

The Congress was restricted to 52 constituencies in the 543-member Parliament, whereas, the Narendra Modi-led BJP had ended up winning 303 seats -- way above the majority mark. The dismal performance compelled Gandhi to step down from his position as president of the Congress party. He has, however, is playing the role of a vocal critic of the Indian Prime Minister's policies.
