New Delhi, May 1: The Election Commission (EC) on Wednesday issued a notice to Congress President Rahul Gandhi for alleged violation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC). The notice was issued over his comments on Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a rally in Madhya Pradesh’s Shahdol. The poll panel asked the Congress president to reply with 48 hours. During his rally in Shahdol Last month, Gandhi had said, “Narendra Modi has made a new law in which there is a line that says tribals can be shot at.”
Meanwhile, on Tuesday, the Congress chief was also rapped by the Supreme Court. Gandhi’s counsel apologised before the Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi-led bench, and agreed to file a fresh affidavit submitting his unconditional apology for attributing the "chowkidar chor hai" remark to the apex court. The court has fixed May 6 as the next date of hearing, when Gandhi would be submitting a fresh affidavit of his apology before the bench.
Earlier in the day, the EC issued a notice against Punjab minister and Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu for allegedly making personal remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a rally in Ahmedabad on April 17. The poll panel asked Sidhu to reply by 6 pm on Thursday. It is the second time, a notice has been issued against the Punjab minister by the EC. Sidhu had called PM Narendra Modi the "biggest liar" in his speech in Ahmedabad on April 17.
