New Delhi, April 30: The Ministry of Home Affairs on Tuesday issued a notice to Congress president Rahul Gandhi asking him to clear the air on his alleged British citizenship. The notice has been after BJP parliamentarian and senior advocate Subramanian Swamy filed a complaint claiming that Congress chief holds dual citizenship.

In the letter sent by the MHA to Gandhi, it was asked to clear his stand on the dual citizenship status based on the complaint filed by Swamy. In the complaint, Swamy had mentioned about a UK based firm Backops Limited for which Gandhi allegedly returns for the 2005 and 2006. It further claims that Gandhi had allegedly declared his nationality as British. Rahul Gandhi Has Net Worth of Rs 15.88 Crore, Income Grew Rs 6.4 Crore in 5 Years, Says Congress Chief's Lok Sabha Election 2019 Affidavit

Taking cognisance of the complaint, the MHA had issued the notice to the Congress president. However, Congress has called this a political vendetta as Swamy had been known for accusing Congress in cases. The BJP leader was the one who had accused Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in the National Herald case.

Political Vendetta:

Meanwhile, Congress has accused the present Union government of using the issue as political vendetta during the Lok Sabha Elections 2019. Expressing his opinion, Congress leader Abhay Deol said, as reported by News 18, "The issues have been clarified had been cleared by the government of India previously. The present government wants to take political advantage till the Lok Sabha Elections 2019 are in place. These are false allegations which stem from political vendetta."

Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said, "The entire world knows Rahul Gandhi is Indian citizen by birth. Modi Ji has no answer for unemployment, Modi Ji has no answer for agrarian distress&black money, that's why he's resorting to fake narrative through his govt's notices to divert attention."

Earlier, in the British citizenship row, independent candidates had made complaints about Rahul Gandhi's affidavit. However, the poll conducting body had given the Congress president a clean chit to contest for Lok Sabha Elections 2019 from both Amethi and Wayanad.
