Chandigarh, December 30: Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh, speaking on the "The Accidental Prime Minister" film controversy, said that the trailer of the film was tweeted from BJP's official twitter handle and promoted by its leaders to criticize former Prime Minister of India, Dr Manmohan Singh. The Punjab CM said that the BJP leaders' actions show their desperation and frustration in the face of imminent defeat in upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The film "The Accidental Prime Minister" is screen adaption of a book with the same title. The book, authored by former PM Manmohan Singh's then media advisor Sanjaya Baru, claims to be a true account of the former PM's years in office.

The film is in controversy ever since the trailer was launched a few days back. The film is supposed to release on January 11, 2019. The Accidental Prime Minister Row: Former Media Advisor to Dr Manmohan Singh Calls the Film ‘Work of People With Low Calibre and Intellect’.

Several Opposition parties, especially the Congress, have denounced the BJP for tweeting out the trailer of the film, a political drama based on a book written by former prime minister Manmohan Singh’s media advisor Sanjaya Baru, last week.

The biopic stars Anupam Kher as Manmohan Singh and Akshaye Khanna as Sanjaya Baru. The trailer of the movie shows Singh as a victim of the Congress’s internal politics ahead of the 2014 general elections. Anupam Kher Compares Himself to Manmohan Singh, The Accidental Prime Minister Actor Trolled For Praising Himself, Check Funny Tweets and Memes.

Amarinder Singh in a statement said the BJP’s attempt to project Manmohan Singh as a “weak and docile” prime minister is “not only childish but brazenly politically motivated”. He said Manmohan Singh is a “great economist, an independent thinker and decision maker, who had created a niche for himself as one of India’s most intelligent and visionary leaders”.
