New Delhi, September 3: Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi is likely to be appointed the president of the party's Uttar Pradesh unit. Currently, Raj Babbar is the chief of Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee. Priyanka Gandhi's likely appointment is part of a strategy chalked out by the Congress party for the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. In the past few months, Priyanka Gandhi, who is in-charge of eastern Uttar Pradesh, has met over 11,000 Congress workers and supporters from the state. She also met leaders from both eastern and western Uttar Pradesh. Since Congress's rout in Uttar Pradesh in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, she has been regularly targetting the Yogi Adityanath government. She drew all attention and managed to sideline tall politicians such as Mayawati and Akhilesh during the Sonbhadra massacre episode.
Priyanka was detained on her way to meet kins of the victims of the Sonbhadra killings. But she did not relent and refused to leave without meeting them. The Yogi Adityanath government finally blinked and let the families of the Sonbhadra victims meet Priyanka. Even while campaigning during the general elections, Priyanka had asked the party workers to start preparing for the 2022 Assembly elections. When Priyanka was appointed party General Secretary in-charge of eastern Uttar Pradesh, Rahul Gandhi had said that he had sent his sister to the state with a larger plan. "She hasn't been sent here for four months, she has been sent here with a larger plan... We will not only defeat BJP in 2019 but also win 2022 elections," Rahul Gandhi had told reporters on January 23.
The Congress party could win just one (Raebareli) out of 80 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh. Rahul Gandhi also lost his traditional Amethi seat to Smriti Irani. Congress suffered a humiliating defeat in the Lok Sabha elections by winning a paltry 52 seats.
