New Delhi, September 4: Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday slammed the Yogi Adityanath government over recently-announced hike in electricity rates in Uttar Pradesh. In a tweet, Priyanka Gandhi said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in Uttar Pradesh is punishing people after looting funds. The Uttar Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission (UPERC) approved up to 12 per cent increase in power tariffs. Priyanka Gandhi Likely to be Appointed Uttar Pradesh Congress Chief Ahead of UP Assembly Elections 2022.

"First the burden of expensive petrol and diesel and now the cost of expensive electricity: BJP government of Uttar Pradesh is trying to cut the pocket of common people. Why?" Priyanka Gandhi tweeted. "After emptying the coffers, the BJP government is now running a whip of recovery on the public. What kind of government is this?" the Congress leader asked. She has been regularly targetting the Yogi Adityanath government.

The political circle is abuzz with speculations that Congress might appoint Priyanka Gandhi as the president of the party's Uttar Pradesh unit. At present, Raj Babbar is the chief of Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee. When Priyanka was appointed party General Secretary in-charge of eastern Uttar Pradesh, Rahul Gandhi had said that he had sent his sister to the state with a larger plan. "She hasn't been sent here for four months, she has been sent here with a larger plan... We will not only defeat BJP in 2019 but also win 2022 elections," Rahul Gandhi had told reporters on January 23.

The Congress party could win just one (Raebareli) out of 80 Lok Sabha seats in Uttar Pradesh. Rahul Gandhi also lost his traditional Amethi seat to Smriti Irani.
