The police brutality in Jamia Millia was reported last night, shortly after violence was reported at the protest against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in South Delhi. Four DTC buses were set ablaze and nearly a dozen other vehicles were vandalised in Jamia region by the protesters on Sunday evening.
The Jamia students' union issued a statement disassociating itself from the violence. The group blamed anti-social elements who infiltrated the students' march for the incidents of arson.
The riot control squad of Delhi Police subsequently entered the campus of Jamia University and reportedly attacked the students. "Police have entered the campus by force, no permission was given. Our staff and students are being beaten up and forced to leave the campus," said the statement issued by the Chief Proctor last night.
A similar crackdown was also launched by the Uttar Pradesh police in the AMU, where protests erupted against the violence perpetrated against the Jamia students. Subsequently, internet was suspended in Aligarh and the AMU was ordered to remain closed till January 5.
