New Delhi, January 5: Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra lashed out at the Narendra Modi over the violence that took place inside the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Sunday evening. In a series of tweets, Priyanka Gandhi accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of spreading fear among children of the country which is hampering India’s image on the global platform. The Congress general secretary also alleged that the BJP leaders are lying to the people of the country by pretending that the goons who attacked JNU students did not have any link with the saffron party.

Moments after the attack on JNU students on campus, Priyanka Gandhi had also accused the government of encouraging the violence inside the educational institutions. The Congress leader had alleged that the police also thrashed the JNU students. She visited the visited injured JNU students at AIIMS in New Delhi. Wounded students at AIIMS trauma centre told me that goons entered the campus and attacked them with sticks and other weapons. Many had broken limbs and injuries on their heads. One student said the police kicked him several times on his head.

Meanwhile, a section of opposition leaders including Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, CPI (M) leader Sitaram Yechury criticised the Central government for the violence inside the JNU. In an apparent dig at the Narendra Modi government, he tweeted, “The brutal attack on JNU students & teachers by masked thugs that has left many seriously injured is shocking. The fascists in control of our nation, are afraid of the voices of our brave students. Today’s violence in JNU is a reflection of that fear.”
Other political leaders who condemned the attack include Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee and Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav. Union Ministers Amit Shah, Nirmala Sitharaman and S Jaishanker also condemned the violence on the university campus. Shah also spoke to Delhi police commissioner Amulya Patnaik on the incident. Shah asked for a report on the entire incident from the Delhi police. Joint Commissioner Western Range, Shalini Singh, will investigate the case and submit the report.
On Sunday evening, around 50 masked men entered the JNU. They thrashed students and vandalised hostels. The JNU student union president Aishe Ghosh was also brutally beaten up by the mob. According to reports, 20 students have been admitted at AIIMS, out then two are in critical condition. After the incident, massive security was deployed inside the university. The student union blamed ABVP for the attack. However, the BJP’s student wing organisation denied these allegations.
