Ponnani Lok Sabha Constituency in Kerala Results 2019: IUML Candidate ET Mohammed Basheer Elected MP

The results of the Ponnani Lok Sabha Constituency has been declared. Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) candidate ET Mohammed Basheer won the seat yet again with 5,21,824 votes. Basheer won over a margin of 1,93,273 votes in Ponnani. Other candidates in the fray included LDF backed Independent candidate P V Anvar Puthan Veeti, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) candidate Susheela PP and Bharatiya Janata Party' Prof. V T Rema. Voting took place for the Palakkad Constituency on April 23. Ponnani is one among the 20 Lok Sabha constituencies in the Indian state of Kerala. Ponnani which comes under Malappuram District is a Municipality in Ponnani Taluk. The constituency is a Muslim majority area and the Constituency number is 7. Ponnani Lok Sabha constituency comprises of seven assembly segments including Tirurangadi, Tanur, Tirur, Kottakkal, Tavanur, Ponnani and Thrithala.

Ponnani have been a vote bank of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML). Congress' all IUML's National organising secretary, ET Muhammed Basheer who has been the sitting MP since 2009. Nilambur MLA PV Anwar in Ponnani contested as an LDF backed independent candidate this time. ET Mohammed Basheer has won the 2014 and 2009 elections; in 2004, E Ahammed held the seat. V Abdurahman who is current MLA of Tanur was the Left Democratic Front (LDF)'s Independent candidate and BJP candidate K Narayanan Master had lost to Basheer in 2014 elections.

The Lok Sabha elections 2019 was held between April 11 and May 19 in seven phases. In Kerala, voting was held in a single phase. During the third phase, the polling was held in 115 Lok Sabha constituencies of 14 states. The counting of votes was held on May 23 and thereafter the results were declared.
