New Delhi, December 18: Former Finance Minister and Congress leader P Chidambaram on Wednesday responded to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's challenge to the opposition party to "openly declare that they will give Indian citizenship to every Pakistani citizen", in reference to recent Citizenship Amendment Act protest across the country. The Premier made this statement during an election rally in Jharkhand's Berhait. "Why should we give citizenship to people who are already citizens of Pakistan? What is the meaning of such challenges to the Opposition?," the Congress leader questioned in a tweet. "It is gratifying that the students and the young generation are liberal, secular, tolerant and exhibit humanism. Is the government challenging these values?" he added.

P Chidambaram Tweet:

PM Modi on Tuesday accused the Congress and its allies of "instigating Muslims for political purpose" and threw a challenge to the opposition parties. “I challenge Congress and their allies if they have the guts they should openly declare that they will give Indian citizenship to every Pakistani citizen and that they will bring back Article 370 in Jammu-Kashmir and Ladakh,” he said.

In a reply, Congress leader Kapil Sibal tweeted: "Dear Modiji, Instead of being obsessed with the citizens of Pakistan please turn your attention to the citizens of Indian and try and address their problems. Remember the people of India elected you to solve the problems confronting our citizens."

Protests against the new Citizenship law, which gives Indian Citizenship to six minority communities from Afghanistan. Bangladesh and Pakistan had turned violent on Sunday. In Dehli and Uttar Pradesh, students from Jamia Millia Islamia University and Aligarh Muslim University protested against the bill. Widespread protests are also witnessed across the country, especially in northeast, Delhi, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh.
