New Delhi, May 7: The Election Commission (EC) on Tuesday gave clean chit to Prime Narendra Modi in two more cases of an alleged violation of Model Code of Conduct (MCC) during campaigning in the run-up to Lok Sabha elections. The poll panel said that PM Modi's speech in Chitradurga, Karnataka, on April 9, where he reportedly asked voters to vote for the heroes of the Balakot air strike, did not violate the MCC. Narendra Modi Gets Third Clean Chit by EC, No Violation of Model Code of Conduct in PM's Barmer Speech, Says Poll Panel.
Besides, PM Modi was also cleared by the EC for his "roadshow" in Ahmedabad held on April 23 after casting his vote. After exercising his democratic right, PM Modi walked some distance from the polling booth and interacted briefly with media persons. The Congress had moved the EC alleging that Modi took out a "roadshow" after casting his vote and made political remarks in violation of the MCC. The prime minister has been given eight clean chits by the poll panel so far. Earlier, the EC had cleared six speeches of Modi, two of Shah and one of Congress chief Rahul Gandhi. The EC said that it found no violation of the MCC in these cases. Gandhi had been issued a show cause notice for his Madhya Pradesh speech in which he had reportedly said that the government had enacted a new law which allows tribals to be shot. On March 19, the EC had issued an advisory asking parties not to invoke armed forces in their political campaign.
Meanwhile, the Congress on Monday moved the Supreme Court challenging the clean chit issued by the EC to PM Modi and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah. The plea was admitted and the apex court is scheduled to hear the case on May 8. The EC was directed by the Supreme Court to decide all cases of MCC violation by May 6.
