Madurai, January 27: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday laid the foundation of new Rs 1,264 crore All India Institute of Medical Sciences in Madurai in Tamil Nadu. On this occasion, PM Modi boasted the Union government’s schemes like Ayushman Bharat and Mission Indradhanush being implemented in the state. He also applauded the State government’s efforts to eradicate TB.

Expressing his happiness on laying the foundation stone for AIIMS in Madurai, the Premier stated that this hospital would help people to get cheaper healthcare. He said, “AIIMS at Madurai will be constructed at the cost of Rs. 1,200 crores. It will benefit the entire population of Tamil Nadu. Along with AIIMS – with a capacity of 100 MBBS seats and 60 BSc (Nursing) seats – PM Modi also inaugurated the speciality blocs of Rajaji Medical College in Madurai; Thanjavur Medical College and Tirunelveli Medical College hospitals. As part of the information, the construction of AIIMS in Madurai will be completed by September 2022.

The Premier also applauded the efforts of Tamil Nadu government to eliminate TB. He said, “I am happy to learn that the state government is up-scaling the TB Free Chennai initiative and seeking to eliminate TB in the state by 2023 itself.”

Speaking about the Union schemes, implemented by the state government, he said, “The launch of Ayushman Bharat is also a big step. Ayushman Bharat seeks to undertake path-breaking interventions to holistically address health issues. The speed and scale at which Mission Indradhanush is working is setting a new paradigm in preventive healthcare. Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana and Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan is making safe pregnancy a mass movement.”
