The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY-Urban) mission is envisioned to be implemented from the period 2015-2022 to provide homes to the urban poor. While the Pradhanmantri Grameen Awas Yojana is formed to provide affordable homes to the rural poor, by the time India celebrates its 75th Independence Day.
The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana- PMAY was launched in June 2015. Under the scheme, the Government plans to build affordable pucca houses with facility of water, sanitation and electricity 24x7. The scheme initially was meant for people in the EWS- Economic Weaker Section (annual income not exceeding ₹3 lakh) and Lower Income Group- LIG (annual income not exceeding ₹6 lakh) sections, but now the mission covers the mid-income group (MIG) as well.
