Bhubneshwar, July 24: BJD candidate Sabitri Agarwal was elected as an MLA after counting of votes for election result of Patkura Assembly seat in Odisha on Wednesday. Polling for Patkura Assembly election was held on July 20. Sabitri Agarwal defeated her nearest BJP nominee Bijoy Mohapatra by 17,655 votes in Patkura Assembly election. She received 95,162 votes, while Mohapatra got 77,507 votes. Congress's Jayanta Kumar Mohanty lost deposit as he received mere 2090 votes.
Counting of votes for Patkura election result took place amid three-tier security ring at Kendrapara Autonomous College. Patkura Vidhan Sabha seat was supposed to go to polls on April 29. However, the polling was postponed following the death of BJD candidate Bed Prakash Agarwal on April 20. The ECI had then fixed May 19 as the new date for the polls in Patkura. However, it was further postponed following cyclone Fani that barrelled through coastal districts. Final Voter Turnout in Patkura Poll 72.75 Percent.
Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s bete noire, Bijoy Mohapatra of the BJP is locked in a fight with BJD nominee Sabitri Agarwal, widow of former MLA Bed Prakash Agarwal. Mohapatra contested from the seat in his bid to make an entry into the state assembly almost after two decades. While 10 candidates were in the fray, it was indeed a direct contest between the BJD and the BJP.
