Kadam Vishwajeet Patangrao of Congress has won the Palus-Kadegaon Assembly constituency in Maharashtra by defeating the Shiv Sena candidate Sanjay Ananda Vibhute. Palus-Kadegaon is one of the 288 Legislative Assembly (Vidhan Sabha) seats in Maharashtra. Geographically, Palus-Kadegaon is one of the eight assembly constituencies that are located in the district of Sangli, Maharashtra. The Election Commission of India, while announcing the Maharashtra Assembly Elections, had said that the voting will be in a single-phase manner and hence the electorate of Palus-Kadegaon will vote on October 21.
Vishwajeet Kadam, of Indian National Congress (INC), is the sitting MLA from Palus-Kadegaon constituency after he won the by-poll in the constituency, which took place in 2018. In 2014 Maharashtra Assembly Elections, it was Congress’ candidate who had won from the constituency. In 2009 Maharashtra Assembly too, it was the Congress party’s candidate who had won from Palus-Kadegaon. Kadam will be fighting the 2019 polls as well on a Congress ticket, against Sanjay Ananda Vibhute of the Shiv Sena among other candidates. The Election Commission on September 21 had announced the election dates of Maharashtra Assembly Elections and Haryana Assembly Elections 2019. The EC had said that the voting in both the states will take place in a single-phased manner, i.e. on October 21.
The votes will be counted on October 24, and the results of Maharashtra Assembly Polls 2014 will be announced on the same day. The EC had also mentioned that all the election-related procedures will be completed by Diwali, i.e. October 28.
In its guidelines for Maharashtra Vidhan Sabha Elections 2019, the EC had directed that specially-abled persons and senior citizens should be provided with all the services. It also said that at least one of the polling booth in every assembly constituency should be women-exclusive only. It means that all the election staff, police and security personnel will be women members only.
The Maharashtra Assembly comprises of 288 Legislative Assembly constituencies. The current term of Maharashtra government is set to end on November 9. It will be intriguing to see which of the two alliances (NDA vs UPA) will form the next government in the western state of Maharashtra.
