Mumbai, May 31: Maharashtra witnessed a high-stake electoral contest on Monday for two Lok Sabha constituencies - Palghar and Bhandara-Gondia and the assembly seat of Palus-Kadegaon. The by-election results are scheduled to be declared today by the Election Commission. The bypolls featured Opposition unity in Maharashtra, as the Congress backed out of the electoral contest in Bhandara-Gondia, whereas, the NCP refrained to contest from Palghar. Notably, the Shiv Sena, which is the ruling alliance partner with the BJP, backed out of the electoral contest in Bhandara-Gondia and Palus-Kadegaon. The bypolls in Palghar was necessitated due to the demise of incumbent BJP MP Chintaman Wanga on January 30 this year. His son Srinivas Wanga is, however, contesting on the Shiv Sena ticket in the by-election from the constituency. The BJP has fielded Rajendra Gavit, a former Congress leader and state minister. The Congress candidate from the seat is Damoo Shingada, whereas, the Bahujan Vikas Aghadi's has fielded former MP Baliram Jadhav.
The by-elections in Bhandara-Gondia was called after the incumbent BJP MP Nana Patole submitted his resignation from the Lok Sabha, citing the alleged anti-farmer policies of the central government. In the bypoll held on Monday, the seat was primarily contested between the BJP's Hemant Patle and NCP's Madhukar Kukde. The Shiv Sena and the Congress had backed Kukde's candidature.
In Palus-Kadegaon, the bypoll was called due to the death of incumbent MLA Patangrao Kadam on March 9. While the NCP and Shiv Sena extended support to Congress candidate Vishwajeet Kadam, the BJP had fielded Sangramsinh Deshmukh, president of Sangli zilla parishad.
