Ranchi, December 18: The sitting Congress MLA from Pakur Alamgir Alam retained the seat in the 2019 Jharkhand assembly elections. Alamgir Alam defeated BJP's Veni Prasad Gupta by a margin of over 65000 votes. The Congress has formed an alliance with the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) for the Jharkhand assembly elections. Of 81 seats, the JMM is contesting 43 while the Congress fights 31. Seven seats are left for the RJD. In the 2014 Jharkhand assembly elections, the BJP emerged as single largest party winning 37 seats. The JMM won 19 seats and the Congress 7. The Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantrik) secured victory in eight constituencies. However, six of their legislators joined the BJP in 2015. Elections for 81 assembly seats in Jharkhand are being held in five phases. The voting for the fourth phase concluded for 15 assembly seats in the state on December 16.
