Padmaavat Row: Supreme Court to hear Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan Govts' Petition Challenging Upliftment of Ban

The petition is slated to be heard in the Supreme Court on January 23, two days prior to its release date.

New Delhi, Jan 22: Padmaavat, earlier Padmavati, has been into a lot controversies recently. In the latest development, the Supreme Court of India has decided to hear the petitions filed by both Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan governments. After repeated threats and violence committed by the Rajput Karni Sena, both the state governments had sought modifications in Supreme Court’s earlier order to lift the ban.

The petition was earlier filed citing the law and order situation in the respective states. The petition is slated to be heard in the Supreme Court on January 23, two days prior to its release date.

Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan are among the four states – other two being Gujarat and Haryana – who had announced to ban the film in their state.

Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, earlier today, said, “It will be good if someone decided not to screen the film. However, it is our duty to comply with Supreme Court’s order and security will be provided to those theatres that decide to screen the film.”

The Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor, and Ranveer Singh-starrer film has faced massive protests from fringe groups who have alleged distortion of history by the filmmakers. The Censor Board of Film Certification (CBFC) had cleared the flick with some modifications earlier this week. Padmaavat is slated to release worldwide on January 25. It will be released in Hindi, Telugu, and Tamil.

Both Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh will see Assembly Elections take place later this year. It will be crucial for both Shivraj Singh Chauhan (MP Chief Minister) and Vasundhara Raje (Rajasthan Chief Minister) to find a solution to this situation and also control the rampant violence prevailing in their states.
