New Delhi, August 22: Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala on Thursday slammed the Narendra Modi government and accused it of using the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Enforcement Directorate (ED) as "personal revenge-seeking departments" against the opposition. The Congress leader was commenting after former finance minister P Chidambaram was arrested by CBI in connection with the INX Media case late Wednesday evening.
Addressing a press conference in the national capital, Randeep Surjwala said, "India witnessed broad daylight murder of democracy as also rule of law in last two days. 'False charges' being heaped upon senior political rivals to 'silence' everyone in the country." He also alleged that the Centre is using CBI and ED as personal revenge-seeking departments for the party in power as also those ruling the country. Questioning the probe of CBI, Surjwala commented that a seasoned politician was arrested on the statement of a woman -- Indrani Mukherjea -- who is charged with the murder of her daughter. Claiming that Chidambaram was innocent, Surejwala said, "Except for a vicious and venal vendetta there was no other foundation to arrest him."
Earlier, Surjewala stated that the Union government is trying to divert the nation’s attention from the sinking Indian economy by enforcing the probing agencies against seasoned politicians. He opined that neither Chidambaram nor his son had been accused of any offence in the INX Media case.
