New Delhi, September 5: Former Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram waved at his supporters and media while he was being taken to the Tihar Jail by the police. A group of Chidambaram's supporters gathered outside the Rouse Avenue Court after the Congress leader was sent to judicial custody in the INX Media case. A video shows Chidambaram waving at his supporters and media while he was escorted to the Tihar Jail in a police van.
In the Tihar Jail, Chidambaram will be lodged in Jail No 7, meant for economic offenders. His son Karti Chidambaram was lodged in the same jail. He will be kept in a separate cell as per the court's direction. The court also allowed Chidambaram to carry his medicines. In the cell, the former union minister will be provided with a cot and western-style toilet. He will have to eat food prepared in prison, though, he can order snacks from the canteen.
"I am only worried about the economy," said Chidambaram after the court sent him to judicial custody till September 19. In a similar instance, on September 3, Chidambaram took a jibe at the government over the growth rate of 5 percent in April to June quarter him when he was asked about his custody in CBI.
Chidambaram Waves From Police Bus Enroute Tihar Jail:
Chidambaram is accused of misusing his position as Union Finance Minister in 2007 while facilitating a huge infusion of foreign funds in INX Media at the instance of his son Karti Chidambaram. He also moved another application in the court seeking permission to surrender in the Enforcement Directorate case relating to INX Media. The court had issued a notice to the financial watchdogs and the hearing on it would take place on September 12.
Earlier on Thursday, the Supreme Court also rejected his plea challenging the Delhi High Court order that had refused anticipatory bail to him in the INX Media case.
