New Delhi, November 27: Senior Congress leader and former union minister P Chidambaram will continue to remain in Delhi's Tihar jail as the Special Court hearing the Enforcement Directorate case has extended his custody by December 11. The court was told by the prosecution that the release of Chidambaram on bail, at this crucial juncture of the case, could hinder the investigation. INX Media Case: Delhi Court Disposes of P Chidambaram's Bail Plea, Says 'No Need to Admit Him to a Sterilised Private Ward at AIIMS.

Chidambaram, accused of flouting the norms in 2007 when he headed the Finance Ministry to favour INX Media, is reeling in jail for over three months. He was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on August 21, and taken into custody by the ED last month.

Update by ANI

Chidambaram is charged of abusing his ministerial position to allow offshore funding in INX Media beyond the permissible limits. For this alleged act of corruption, the investigators claim that he had received bribes through offshore entities linked to his son Karti Chidambaram.

The Congress has alleged a ploy behind the arrest of Chidambaram, claiming that the Centre is targeting him as part of "political vendetta". When Chidambaram was the Union Home Minister in 2009, the then Gujarat state minister Amit Shah was arrested in connection to his alleged role in the Sohrabuddin encounter case. Shah was in 2018 acquitted of all the charges.

Top Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi visited Chidambaram at the Tihar jail earlier today to check upon his health. Karti confirmed to reporters about the visit, saying, "This sends a very powerful signal that the Congress party is completely with my father in this exercise where he is facing the onslaught and wrath of the state in a pure political vendetta case."
