P Chidambaram to Remain in Custody as Special CBI Court Extends Remand Till August 30
A special CBI court on Monday extended custodial interrogation of Former Finance Minister P Chidambaram’s for four more days. P Chidambaram will now remain in the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) custody till August 30. The investigative agency arrested Chidambaram on August 21 in connection with the INX media case.
New Delhi, August 26: A special CBI court on Monday extended custody of Former Finance Minister P Chidambaram for four more days. Chidambaram will now remain in the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) custody till August 30. He will be presented before the court again after his custody ends. Earlier in the day, Special Judge Ajay Kumar Kuhar heard CBI's plea seeking an extension of his custody by five days after arguments that lasted for nearly 40 minutes. Chidambaram was produced before the trial court hours after the Supreme Court refused to entertain his plea challenging the Delhi High Court order which had dismissed his anticipatory bail plea. He was brought by the CBI on expiry of his four-day custodial interrogation which the agency had secured on August 22. Earlier, the apex court said that Chidambaram could not challenge cancellation of his anticipatory bail as he had already been arrested by the CBI. The investigative agency arrested Chidambaram on August 21 in connection with the INX media case. The former finance minister was then sent to a five-day CBI custody till August 26. The Enforcement Directorate and the CBI are also probing the role of Chidambaram's son Karti Chidambaram in getting Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance for INX Media in 2007. P Chidamabaram was finance minister during that period. It also alleged that Karti exerted influence on public servants of the FIPB for not taking action against the media group.
