New Delhi, August 21: Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram was taken into custody on Wednesday evening by the CBI in the INX media scam case. The former Union finance minister was detained from his residence in Jor Bagh in the national capital. The Congress leader's detention by the CBI comes after he addressed media in the Congress headquarters after remaining "untreacable" since Tuesday. The former Union Minister will be taken to the CBI headquarters from here. CBI director RK Shukla and officials of the CBI as well as ED are present in the headquarters. Chidambaram reached his residence along with Congress leaders and lawyers Kabil Sibbal and Abhishek Manu Singhvi. Chidambaram was missing ever since the Delhi High Court rejected his anticipatory bail in the INX media scam case. In a dramatic turn of events, the CBI and ED officials had to jump the wall of Chidambaram's Jor Bagh residence. Five officers of the CBI questioned Chidambaram at his residence. Delhi police was called by CBI for managing the crowd gathered outside Chidambaram's residence.
Earlier, the Supreme Court will hear former finance minister P Chidambaram's anticipatory bail plea in the INX Media case on Friday. On Wednesday, P Chidambaram's lawyers tried to get the listing of the matter today itself. But the top court said that it will hear the matter on Friday. The Supreme Court will take a call on the bench of judges who will hear Chidambaram's plea on Thursday, said reports.
The Delhi High Court Tuesday said the INX media case involving former Union minister P Chidambaram is a “classic case of money laundering” and that his custody was essential for the CBI to take the case against him to a conclusion. Justice Sunil Gaur dismissed Chidambaram’s anticipatory bail plea in the corruption and money laundering cases in the INX Media scam case.
