New Delhi/Kolkata, August 22: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday came in support of former Union finance minister P Chidambaram and condemned the procedure of CBI with which it handled the issue. She called the whole process of arrest depressing, bad and sad -- without going into the legalities of the INX Media case.

Expressing her opinion on the CBI's procedure of arresting P Chidambaram, Banerjee said, as quoted by news agency ANI, "Sometimes the process is incorrect, I'm not talking about legality, but Chidambaram is a senior politician, he is a former finance minister and home minister. The way his matter has been handled, that is very depressing, that's very bad, and sad as well." Even Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) chief MK Stalin condemned the CBI's move and called it a political vendetta and revenge by the ruling party. Stalin said, "I too saw how CBI jumped the wall and arrested him; it's a matter of shame for India, it is a political vendetta. Chidambaram had asked for anticipatory bail, but he was arrested, it's condemnable."

Earlier, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala accused Narendra Modi government of using the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Enforcement Directorate (ED) as "personal revenge-seeking departments" against the opposition. He said, "India witnessed broad daylight murder of democracy as also rule of law in the last two days. 'False charges' being heaped upon senior political rivals to 'silence' everyone in the country." He also alleged that the Centre is using CBI and ED as personal revenge-seeking departments for the party in power as also those ruling the country.

Earlier, Surjewala stated that the Union government is trying to divert the nation’s attention from the sinking Indian economy by enforcing the probing agencies against seasoned politicians. He opined that neither Chidambaram nor his son had been accused of any offence in the INX Media case.
