Chennai, July 14: Senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha member Jairam Ramesh on Friday once again opposed the central government’s proposal to hold elections to state assemblies and Lok Sabha simultaneously. Speaking at an event at Royapettah in Chennai Ramesh said that by supporting 'one nation one election', you would deny yourself the ability to enforce some accountability of the executive.
The senior Congress leader also took a jibe on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said that It was the debacle in successive polls, in the last 12 months that had made the PM more aware of concerns of farmers and unemployed etc.
From the very beginning the Congress is against the idea of ‘one nation one poll’ proposed by the centre. The opposition party even termed the proposal as anti-democratic. The party believes that if the idea is implemented, then it will result in the prolonged spells of President's rule and the state assemblies will remain suspended over the more extended period.
According to the Congress, the one nation one poll proposal will deny the electors a choice they have in voting out a government even if it is not able to fulfil its promises. Senior Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi taking a dig at PM Modi said that the centre had spent Rs 4600 crore over the past four years on its publicity and which was more than the estimated cost of all state and central elections.
