Chandigarh, July 29: As ambiguity over the selection of next Congress president continues, Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh said the entire party would "absolutely back" the appointment of Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, the younger sister of outgoing party chief Rahul Gandhi.
On being asked whether the youngest Gandhi scion would be a suitable option to lead the party, Amarinder said he has faith in her leadership qualities. However, the veteran leader added that it is upto Priyanka, as well as Rahul, to decide if should be appointed at the helm. ‘Who Is Congress President,’ Asks Omar Abdullah After Eknath Gaikwad’s Appointment As Mumbai Congress Working Chief
"Outgoing Congress president to take a call on that. I'm sure as far as Priyanka ji is concerned there would be absolute support of the party if our Congress president (Rahul Gandhi) wishes that," the Punjab CM said.
Amarinder's remarks comes a day after Congress parliamentarian Shashi Tharoor said the leadership crisis is adversely affecting the party's organisation and prospects.
"It is certainly quite true that the lack of clarity at the top of the party is likely to be hurting the Congress workers and sympathisers, many of whom miss the fact of having a party leader to look to for key decisions, authority and even inspiration and energy, to rally together and move forward,” the MP from Thiruvananthapuram said.
Notably, Rahul Gandhi resigned as the Congress chief on July 3 this year, taking accountability over the party's debacle in Lok Sabha elections 2019. During the Congress Working Committee meeting, he had also opposed the suggestion of appointing his mother Sonia Gandhi or sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra at the party's helm.
