Srinagar, April 30: Jammu Kashmir National Conference vice president and former state chief minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday promised to scrap Public Safety Act (PSA) if voted to power in the Lok Sabha Elections 2019 and in the assembly polls later this year. Along with this, he also promised with the scrapping of NSA, 'no mother will have to look for their children in jails'.

Expressing his opinion on the current condition of Jammu and Kashmir amid Lok Sabha Elections, Omar said, as reported by News 18, "Will scrap Public Safety Act (PSA) if voted to power. Public Safety Act, 1978

It is to be known that the Jammu and Kashmir Public Safety Act was enacted by the State Legislature in 1978 and extends to the whole state. As per the law, special precautions are taken to prevent the entry of unauthorised persons and the government can declare that place to be a prohibited place.

Along with this, any police officer may search any person entering or seeking to enter a prohibiting area and may detain such person, vehicle, aircraft and article. However, no female shall be searched in pursuance of this subsection except by a female. Following the prohibition of the Public Safety Act, a person can be punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend to one month, or with fine, or with both.
