New Delhi, June 18: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is likely to nominate its Member of Parliament (MP) Om Birla for the post of Speaker in Lok Sabha. Om Birla represents the Kota-Bundi parliamentary seat in Rajasthan. The post of Speaker of Lok Sabha was previously held by Sumitra Mahajan who didn't contest the election.

In the recently concluded Lok Sabha election, Om Birla defeated Congress candidate Ramnarayan Meena by a margin of 2,79,677 votes. Om Birla received 8,00,051 votes, while Meena got 5,20,374 votes. He was a three-time Member of Rajasthan Legislative Assembly from Kota South. 1st Time MPs of BJP: 131 of Saffron Party's 303 Lawmakers in 17th Lok Sabha Are Debutants.

Born on November 23, 1962, Om Birla has a Master's degree in Commerce. He has been associated with the BJP since a young age. He joined Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha as a student activist and went on to become the national vice-president of the outfit. He married Dr Amita Birla in March 1991. The couple have two daughters, Akansha and Anjali.

Om Birla will be nominated as a candidate of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The BJP has reportedly offered the post of deputy speaker of the Lok Sabha to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy's YSRCP. Jagan is said to have sought time to take a final role.

Newly elected lawmakers from the Lok Sabha elect the Speaker among themselves. Since the BJP has an absolute majority in the lower house of Parliament, Om Birla will sail to victory easily.
