New Delhi, June 29: Bengali actress and newly-elected Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Nusrat Jahan is being criticised for marrying a non-Muslim with Hindu rituals. Nusrat Jahan got married to her businessman beau Nikhil Jain in the picturesque Turkish town of Bodrum on June 15. Days after her wedding, a fatwa has been issued against Nusrat Jahan for applying sindoor, wearing mangalsutra and marrying a non-Muslim.

Mufti Asad Wasmi, a cleric from Deoband, said they don't want to interfere in Nusrat Jahan's life but her wedding was against Shariat. "After investigation, we got to know that she married into the Jain religion, Islam says that a Muslim can only marry a Muslim. Second, I want to say that Nusrat Jahan is an actor and these actors do not care about religion. They do what they feel like doing. This is what she showcased in Parliament," Wasmi told Times Now.

"She came to Parliament with sindoor and mangalsutra, so it is a waste of time to talk about this. We cannot interfere in her life. I just told her what Shariat says with the help of media," the cleric added. For taking oath as an MP, Nusrat Jahan came to Parliament with a bunch of wedding bangles, in a white and purple saree and had henna based designs on her hands. She was wearing sindoor and mangalsutra. Nusrat Jahan, Mimi Chakraborty Trolled For Photo-Op in Parliament on First Day, Netizens Compare Them With Other MPs.

Amid the controversy, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sadhvi Prachi defended Nusrat Jahan and attempted to add "love jihad" twist to it. She said: "If a Muslim woman marries a Hindu and wears bindi, bicchwe, mangalsutra, the Muslim clerics call it haraam. I feel sorry for their intellect but many Muslim men trap our Hindu daughters in the name of love jihad and ask them to wear the burqa, then that is not haram. That is justified for them."

Nusrat Jahan was elected from Basirhat, West Bengal. Raising the first issue in Lok Sabha, she sought a Kendriya Vidyalaya in her parliamentary constituency.
