NRC in Tripura: State Congress Chief Pradyot Debbarman Resigns Amid Differences With Northeast Incharge Luizinho Falerio
With differences gaining momentum between two political stalwarts of Congress over National Register of Citizens, Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee president Pradyot Debbarman resigned from his post. He had accused general secretary in-charge of the Northeast Luizinho Falerio for pressurising him to take back case from Supreme Court.
Mumbai, September 17: With differences gaining momentum between two political stalwarts of Congress over National Register of Citizens, Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee president Pradyot Debbarman resigned from his post. In his resignation letter to the Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, Debbarman had alleged that general secretary in-charge of the Northeast Luizinho Falerio was asking him to take back his case from Supreme Court or leave the party. According to a report, published in the Hindustan Times, the party's state president Debbarman had filed a case in the Supreme Court with a request for the updating of the NRC. Following this, he was allegedly pressurised by Falerio to take back the case or leave the party. After considering the political scenario, Debbarman sent his resignation to the Gandhis, as well as Falerio.
Earlier, there were reports that Debbarman had caused a stir in the party meeting -- called by Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi -- where he had advised deriving new ways to attract more young people in its fold. He had also mentioned that the party should not focus more on working out ways of Gandhi Jayanti celebrations. On the very next day, he allegedly spoke against Falerio in front of other leaders during the party’s Northeast leaders meet. It is to be known that Debbarman had expressed his willingness to resign from his post owing to differences with party leaders in the region. However, he was asked to remain as the party chief in the state by then party president Rahul Gandhi.
