Counting of votes begin to determine the winner for the crucial assembly bypoll results of Uttar Pradesh's Noorpur constituency. The contest here is primarily between BJP's Avnish Singh and Samajwadi Party's Naeem-ul-Hasan.

Bijnor, May 31: The Election Commission will declare the results of Noorpur bypoll today. The crucial assembly seat was contested on May 28, along with the by-election in the neighbouring Lok Sabha constituency of Kairana. The electoral battle witnessed a fight primarily between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and the Samajwadi Party (SP). Notably, the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the Congress had extended support to the SP candidate in the fray. Stay tuned here for the live news and updates related to Noorpur by-election results.

Noorpur witnessed 61 per cent electorate turnout in the bypoll held on Monday, nearly 6 per cent less than the voting percentage recorded in 2017. The polling was marred with glitches as the electronic voting machines (EVM) had malfunctioned at nearly 110 booths.

The SP had put the onus of EVM snags on the ruling Yogi Adityanath government. "If they have nothing to be afraid of, why can't they fight a single election on ballot papers," said senior party leader Rajendra Chowdhary.

Noorpur Bypolls 2018: Factsheet

Last winner: The seat was retained by BJP MLA Lokendra Singh in the 2017 assembly elections, who defeated his nearest rival - SP's Naim-ul-Hasan by a margin of over 13,000 votes.

Reason for bypoll: The by-election was necessitated due to the demise of Lokendra on February 21, 2018. The 42-year-old legislator died in a road accident near Sitapur.

Candidates in Fray: Avnish Singh, the wife of deceased MLA Lokendra Singh, is the BJP nominee from the seat. The Samajwadi Party has reposed faith in Naim-ul-Hasan, who lost by 13,000 votes in the last elections. The SP candidate is being backed by the BSP, Congress and RLD.

The bypoll results are considered to be a litmus test on the performance of the Yogi Adityanath-led BJP government which stormed to power with a three-fourth majority in the assembly elections held last year. Two months prior to the Noorpur by-election, the ruling party was jolted in Gorakhpur and Phulpur, as both the seats were wrested by the SP. Notably, the two Lok Sabha constituencies were last represented by Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath and Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya, respectively.
