No-Confidence Motion Not Introduced in Lok Sabha, House Adjourned Till Tomorrow
While TDP and YSRCP MPs were protesting over special category status to Andhra Pradesh, AIADMK members were agitating over the Cauvery issue.
New Delhi, March 19: Following a ruckus in Lok Sabha on Monday, the no-confidence motion against Narendra Modi government was not introduced. Following continues Lok Sabha, Speaker Sumitra Mahajan adjourned the House till Tuesday. The second phase of the Budget session that resumed on March 5 has seen continuous disruptions.
In what is believed to be a stormy start to the Budget Session in Parliament, the Lok Sabha resumed after brief adjournment on Monday. While TDP and YSRCP MPs were protesting over special category status to Andhra Pradesh, AIADMK members were agitating over the Cauvery issue.
On Monday, Speaker Mahajan said that she has received notices about motion and says they will be accepted only if the House is peaceful. The TSR, YSRCP MPs came into the Well and started raising slogans like "We want justice". The Speaker made all efforts to introduce the no-confidence motion notices. Mahajan requested all MPs to sit on their designated spots so that a quorum could be established, but members in the House continued with the commotion, forcing the House to be adjourned for the day.
"Since the House is not in order, I will not be able to bring the notices in the House," says Mahajan said while adjourning the House for the day. Meanwhile, Rajya Sabha too was adjourned till Tuesday after protests from TDP, AIADMK, YSRCP members.
Despite the constant disruptions, the government passed the Financial Bill using a procedure called “guillotine” to ensure that all outstanding demands for grants were put to vote at once without discussions. Soon after the bill was passed, the Congress termed it as a “black day for democracy”.
Reactions on a no-confidence motion in Lok Sabha:
Home Minister Rajnath Singh said, "We want discussion on the no-confidence motion. I request all MPs to maintain decorum so that we can discuss it. We are ready to discuss any issue with any member."
Prem Singh Chandumajra of Shiromani Akali Dal said, “We are in favour of special category status to Andhra Pradesh. We are not in favor of no-confidence against the Modi government, we will support the government”.
TRS MP AP Jithender Reddy was quoted by ANI saying, 'We have been fighting for Telanagana cause from the beginning. As a new state, our population is different, so we want to have own set of reservations in the state. Why should India have different laws for different states?’
O Pannerselvam, Deputy Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu said that TN govt will never let state down. He said the issues of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu are different from each other. "Don't compare their (TDP) issue with Cauvery issue. Our (TN) Govt will never let state down. Supreme Court has given six weeks time (for the formation of Cauvery management board), so if nothing happens we all will discuss future course of action," he was quoted by ANI.
Meanwhile Stalin asked Tamil Nadu govt to support no-trust motion. “Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu to put pressure on Central government has gone for no confidence motion for the welfare of their state. I ask this(Tamil Nadu) Government to support TDP's no confidence motion”. Stalin said.
Rajya Sabha Chairman Venkaiah Naidu said that the Parliament has become a laughing stock because of repeated adjournments due to protests from Well of the House. While speaking in the House today, Naidu said, “This is not in the interest of the country, this is not in the interest of Parliament".
To recall, the Parliament secretariat received 3 notices on a no-confidence motion on Monday, 2 from TDP &1 from YSRCP. If House in order and quorum established, LS Speaker likely to bring No Confidence motion after Question Hour. It must be noted that 50 members are needed to establish Quorum.
Protests were held by TDP members earlier on Monday. TDP MPs protested in front of Mahatma Gandhi statue in Parliament over special category status to Andhra Pradesh. Congress MP Renuka Chowdhury also joined the protest.
