New Delhi/Kolkata, December 20: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday condemned the remarks of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on the demanding a nationwide voting of Citizenship Amendment Act. The FM also sought an answer from Banerjee on whether she has faith in institutions of India or not?
Slamming the West Bengal CM's remark on CAA and seeking the intervention of United Nations for a nationwide poll, Sitharaman said, as quoted by new agency ANI, "I totally condemn her statement. And it is irresponsible of a chief minister to talk like that." Mamata Banerjee Demands UN Intervention in CAA-NRC Row, Calls For Nationwide Voting on Issue.
Adding more, Sitharaman stated it clearly that the Union government never wanted a third party of international fora's interference in country's matters. FM said, "We never wanted a 3rd party or international fora's interference in our affairs. On a completely domestic matter she has chosen to ask for UN. Does she have no faith in institutions of India?"
Here's the ANI tweet:
Earlier on Thursday, Banerjee -- while addressing a gathering -- had said, "Let there be an impartial organisation like United Nations or National Human Rights Commission form a committee to see how many people are in favour or against." Adding ore she had said, "Suddenly after 73 years of independence we have to prove that we are Indian citizens. Where was BJP's head and tail at that time, BJP is dividing the country. Don't stop your protest because we have to get CAA revoked."
Following the CM's remarks, Bharatiya Janata Party BJP leader and West Bengal in-charge Kailash Vijayvargiya alleged that it is because of the TMC supremo's actions, due to which people are being misled to protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act. Asking Banerjee to immediately resign, the BJP leader said, "With full responsibility, I am saying this that the immigrants have been doing vandalism from the day Mamata Banerjee has started opposing CAA. I think after what she is doing, she has no right to continue as the CM."
