New Delhi, December 31: Congress lawmaker P Chidambaram on Tuesday hoped that detained mainstream politicians, including three former Chief Ministers Farooq Abdullah, Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti, will get "freedom and justice" in the new year 2020. In a series of tweets, P Chidambaram said that the struggle for freedom is "never-ending", adding that the fight is to save the Constitution. "Our first greetings for the New Year must go to Farooq Abdullah, Omar Abdullah, Mehbooba Mufti and other leaders detained in J&K since August 5 without any charge. May the New Year bring them freedom and justice!" Chidambaram said in one of his tweets. "I offer my greetings to all the people for the New Year. The New Year begins with a reminder that the struggle for freedom is a never-ending struggle and 'eternal vigilance is the price of liberty'," the former Union Minister added. Chidambaram said that the country should aim the accomplishment made by former US President Abraham Lincoln. "Our task is no less than the task accomplished by Abraham Lincoln in 1865 - to save the Constitution," the Congress leader said. Several mainstream politicians, including Farooq Abdullah, Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti, have been detained since August 5 when the Modi government moved to withdraw Jammu and Kashmir's special status granted under Article 370.
Farooq Abdullah has been detained in his house at Gupkar Road that has been declared as a sub-jail. Omar Abdullah has been detained at Hari Niwas and Mehbooba Mufti is detained at a government house on MA Road in Srinagar. On Monday, five politicians - Abdul Jabbar, Bashir Ahmad Mir, Zahoor Ahmad Mir, Yasir Reshi, and Ghulam Nabi - were released.
