New Delhi, August 9: The Congress party is likely to appoint its new president tomorrow, according to reports. Congress General Secretary Mukul Wasnik has emerged as the front runner for the top post, reports said. Mukul Wasnik is former Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment. The Congress Working Committee, party's highest decision-making body, will meet tomorrow.
Mukul Wasnik would take charge at least till the organizational elections are held. His name has been reportedly finalised after Congress leaders' meeting at Sonia Gandhi's residence today. If Wasnik is appointed, a non-Gandhi will become Congress president for the first time in two decades. All three Gandhis, Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra have refused to be a part of the process. Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh and Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor had supported Priyanka Gandhi, however, she made it clear to Congress leaders that she wasn't keen on becoming the party president.
Rahul Gandhi offered his resignation from the top post to the Congress Working Committee after the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Several leaders persuaded Rahul to continue, he remained firm on quitting the top post. Last month, he put out a four-page farewell note making it clear that he wouldn't take back his resignation.
