NCW Writes to Delhi Police Commissioner Over Reports of 'Sexual Harassment of Female JMI Students' by Male Police Officers During CAA Protests, Seeks Action

New Delhi, December 16: With allegations of 'sexual harassment and thrashing of female students by male police officers' during the Citizenship Amendment Act protests by Jamia Millia Islamia students on Sunday made the headlines, the National Commission for Women (NCW) on Monday has written to the Delhi Commissioner of Police Amulya Patnaik. In the letter, the NCW has requested him to 'investigate, take action, and file a detailed action taken report'.
Taking cognizance of the reports on the alleged police action by Delhi Police's male personnel, NCW wrote a letter to Patnaik and made a request for the fair investigation. The women right's body also asked the Delhi police chief to take stern action against the perpetrators, if found guilty. Meanwhile, Delhi Police PRO MS Randhawa stated a detailed investigation will be done from all angles by the Crime Branch and appealed students not to believe any rumours. Expressing her opinion on the reports of sexual harassment, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi said, "Govt has given a blow to the Constitution. It's an attack on the soul of the nation, youth is the soul of the nation. It's their right to protest. I'm a mother too. You entered into their library, dragged them out and thrashed them up. This is tyranny."

Briefing a press conference, JMI Registrar AP Siddiqui restrained to confirm or deny on the reports that Police entered the mosque at the campus and also sexually assaulted girl students. He also stated that Delhi Police have denied reports of firing inside the campus. Siddiqui added that they would recommend the Ministry of Human Resource Development to set up a high-level committee or initiate a judicial inquiry into the matter.
Earlier, violence in Delhi erupted on Sunday afternoon, when a section of protesters in the march led by Jamia Millia Islamia students resorted to violence. The miscreants burnt down four buses and vandalised over a dozen vehicles. Fire brigade personnel who were rushed to the site were also allegedly pelted with stones by the infuriated mob.
