New Delhi, May 30: A week after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) scripted a historic victory in the Lok Sabha elections, its leader Narendra Damodardas Modi took oath as the 16th Prime Minister of India. With the majestic Rashtrapati Bhavan in the background, President Ram Nath Kovind administered the oath of office and secrecy in Hindi to PM Narendra Modi. Along with PM Modi, his council of ministers was also administered the oath by President Ram Nath Kovind. Nearly 5000 guests, including heads of several neighbouring countries, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Congress President Rahul Gandhi, attended the glittering swearing-in ceremony.

Earlier today, Narendra Modi visited the memorials of Mahatma Gandhi and Atal Bihari Vajpayee, where he paid his tributes to the late leaders. Modi first visited Raj Ghat, Mahatma Gandhi's memorial and then paid respects to Vajpayee at the 'Sadaiv Atal'. Vajpayee was the first Prime Minister of a BJP-led government.

Modi's third stop was the National War Museum where he was accompanied by Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Army Chief Gen Bipin Rawat, Navy Chief Admiral Sunil Lanba and Vice Chief of Air Force RKS Bhadauria. Modi briefly stood in silence to paid tributes to the fallen soldiers.

The BJP, led by PM Modi, registered a historic victory in the Lok Sabha elections and won a clear mandate to retain power for a second term - a feat achieved only by the likes of Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi in the past.
