In what could turn into a huge setback for the Congress, party President Rahul Gandhi was trailing from his stronghold seat of Amethi as counting of votes was underway for Lok Sabha Elections 2019. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Union Minister Smriti Irani was leading on the seat by a margin of more than 7,000 votes at 11:30 am. However, Gandhi was leading from the Wayanad seat in Kerala. The BJP was leading on more than 280 seats as per the trends coming in from the Election Commission of India. PM Narendra Modi was leading by a huge margin of over 1,00,000 votes on the Varanasi seat. Shalini Yadav of the SP was on the second spot here. In Begusarai, BJP's Giriraj Singh was also leading by a massive margin against Left's Kanhaiya Kumar.

Out of the key seats so far, Shashi Tharoor and Sonia Gandhi were the only two prominent leaders who were leading from their seats of Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala and Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh.

The counting of votes was underway for all 542 seats in the Lok Sabha that went to polls in April and May. Voting for the General Elections 2019 took place in the country in seven phases between April 11 and May 19. The results of these polls will be declared today.
