Narendra Modi Likely to Visit Maldives on June 7, Making His First Bilateral Visit After Assuming Office for Second Term
According to reports, the Prime Minister is set to embark on his first set of foreign visits in the first week of June. Apart from Maldives, the PM is likely to attend several meetings by the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Kyrgyzstan's Bishkek.
New Delhi, May 27: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit Maldives on a two-day tour from June 7 to June 8, sources informed. According to reports, this will be the Prime Minister's first bilateral visit after assuming office for the second term after winning the Lok Sabha Elections 2019. Reports inform that the Prime Minister is set to embark on his first set of foreign visits to Japan, China, Maldives among others, in the first week of June. Apart from Maldives, the PM is likely to attend several meetings by the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Kyrgyzstan's Bishkek. Reports inform that on the sidelines of the two-day SCO summit from June 13-14, Modi is likely to meet his Pakistani counterpart Imran Khan. Towards June end, Modi is likely to visit Osaka in Japan where he would be attending the G20 summit which would comprise of top leaders, including United States President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese premier Xi Jinping.
In November 2018, Modi had visited the island country to attend the swearing-in ceremony of Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, after he surprisingly defeated Abdulla Yameen in the presidential polls. This was followed by Sohil’s visit to India in December after New Delhi had announced financial assistance of USD 1.4 billion to Male in the form of budgetary support.
In March this year, External affairs minister Sushma Swaraj had visited Maldives. It was Swaraj's first full-fledged bilateral trip from India to the island nation after the government of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih came to power in November last year.
In 2014, the Prime Minister had visited Bhutan after becoming prime minister. India-Maldives relationship deteriorated after the then President Abdulla Yameen imposed emergency on February 5 last year. India had criticised his decision and asked his government to restore the credibility of the electoral and political process by releasing political prisoners. The emergency had lasted for 45 days.
