New Delhi, May 31: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday allocated portfolios to the newly sworn in Union Ministers of his government. In a major rejig, BJP veteran Rajnath Singh, the Home Minister in the outgoing government, has been appointed as the Defence Minister. Among other major names, Nirmala Sitharaman, the Defence Minister in the outgoing government, has been allocated the portfolio of Finance and Corporate Affairs. Giant killer Smriti Irani, who defeated Congress president Rahul Gandhi in Amethi, has been allotted the Women and Child Welfare Ministry, in addition to the Textile portfolio which she held in the erstwhile government as well.

At the oath-taking ceremony on Thursday, a total of 58 Ministers were sworn-in. Among them, 25 were accorded Cabinet rank, 11 given independent charge and 24 assigned as Minister of State (MoS).

To the new Ministers, PM Modi has appealed for unity and cohesion to work towards the common goal of development and public welfare.

"This team is a blend of youthful energy and administrative experience. It has people who have excelled as Parliamentarians and those who have had distinguished professional careers. Together, we will work for India’s progress," he had said.

Among major names who are not part of the second Modi government, include BJP veteran Arun Jaitley, who has opted out on health grounds; his longtime colleague Sushma Swaraj who had hinted retirement from politics nearly six months ago; 8-time MP Maneka Gandhi, who was expected to be  appointed as the Speaker of 17th Lok Sabha.

Apart from them, senior BJP leaders Suresh Prabhu, Jayant Sinha, Vijay Goel, Rajyavardhan Rathore and Anantkumar Hegde -- all Ministers in the erstwhile Modi regime -- have been excluded.
