Narada Sting Case: CBI Seeks Sanction From Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to Prosecute Saugata Roy, 2 Other TMC MPs

New Delhi, August 29: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday sought “prosecution sanction” from Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla against three current MPs in the Narada sting case, reported ANI. According to reports, permission has also been sought for action against one former MP in the case. The CBI has sought permission to persecute Saugata Roy, Prasun Banerjee, Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar and former TMC MP Suvendu Adhikari. The Narada sting case relates to a sting operation done in 2016 which allegedly showed political leaders accepting cash for favours.

Roy, who at one time was considered close to West Bengal CM and TMC chief Mamata Banerjee, had a fall out in 2015 when his name came up in Saradha scam as well as in Narada sting operation. He was suspended from the party for six years, following which, he had resigned from Trinamool Congress in September 2017. He then joined the BJP.
In the sting operation, which was claimed to have been carried out in 2014, some persons resembling senior Trinamool Congress leaders and the IPS officer are seen accepting money from the representatives of a fictitious company in return for favours.
However, the sting video footages were uploaded in the news portal before the West Bengal assembly elections in 2016, creating a furore in the state politics. In the case, the investigating agency had registered FIR against 12 TMC leaders, including MPs and ministers in West Bengal Government, and an IPS officer for corruption in the case.
