The counting of votes today will decide the fate of 195 candidates in the northeastern state. As per reports, of the 195 candidates vying for a seat in the 60-member Assembly this time, five are women. The reason why polling was held in 59 of the 60 constituencies is that the scheduled election in Northern Angami II constituency did not take place as only incumbent MLA Neiphiu Rio was nominated and was therefore declared elected unopposed.
Even after 54 years of statehood and 12 assembly elections, Nagaland is yet to see any woman representative in the Assembly. The tenure of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly ends on 13 March 2018.
