New Delhi, August 4: Congress President Rahul Gandhi today launched a scathing attack on Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar during the protest led by the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) over Muzaffarpur shelter home rapes case. While speaking at the protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, Gandhi asked the chief minister to take action against the people responsible. The Congress president said, “We have gathered here for the women of our country, and we stand with them. If Nitish ji is really feeling ashamed then he should take immediate action.”
RJD Leader and former deputy chief minister of Bihar Tejashwi Yadav is leading the protest. He demanded the death penalty for the main accused Brajesh Thakur. Speaking to ANI, Yadav said, “We want Brajesh Thakur to be hanged till death. If you see, the number of crimes in Bihar has increased in the past one year. Cases of gangrape are being reported back to back from various districts of the state.” According to Yadav, The girl who had all the information was shifted to a shelter home in Madhubani. He further added that nobody had any information about her since then.
The former deputy chief minister also alleged the Bihar government for protecting the main accused. He said, “Even after the report of Child Commission was out no action was taken. FIR was lodged 2 months after Tata Insititute report came and in that too name of prime accused Brajesh Thakur was missing.”
In a show of opposition unity over the protest, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, CPI leader D Raja, CPI (M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury, former JDU leader Sharad Yadav also joined the protest at the Jantar Mantar. Kejriwal also demanded death penalty for Thakur. He said that it is the same Jantar Mantar where he protested for Nirbahaya in 2012 and not he is protesting for 40 Nirbhayas.
Yesterday, Kumar broke his silence over the incident. He said that it has shamed the government, and also assured severe punishment for those who found guilty. On July 28, the police confirmed that 34 minor girls were raped inside the shelter home in Muzaffarpur. Initially, medical examinations of 42 girls revealed that 29 of them were raped. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the probe from the Muzaffarpur Police.
