Bhopal, December 12: In a dramatic turn of events, the Congress emerged as the single largest party in Madhya Pradesh by bagging 114 seats after a 24-hour counting session on Tuesday. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is on the verge of being ousted from power after it ruled the state for 15 years under the leadership of Shivraj Singh Chouhan. With the win, all eyes on the Congress, the kingmaker in Madhya Pradesh. The BJP has been in power in Madhya Pradesh for last 15 years and was hopeful for the fourth term in the state.

Meanwhile, Madhya Pradesh Congress chief Kamal Nath wrote to Governor Anandiben Patel on Tuesday night, staking claim to form the government in the state. Congress claimed it has the support of the independent candidates. The letter stated that the Congress party has emerged as the single largest party with a majority and all the independents have in addition assured support to the Congress party.
“As the president of Pradesh Congress Committee, I seek an appointment with your Excellency late tonight, as soon as the results are officially declared along with my senior leaders to apprise you and seek your permission to form a government in the state of Madhya Pradesh,” Nath said in the letter. While chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan won the elections from Budhni assembly constituency by defeating his nearest Congress rival Arun Yadav, scores of ministers in his ministry trailed. With the Congress' win the state, there is a close battle for leadership between Kamal Nath, Jyotiraditya Scindia and Digvijaya Singh. In the 2013 elections, the BJP had won 165 of the 230 seats, followed by the Congress at 58 and BSP at four.
