Aizawl, November 27: Polling for Mizoram Legislative Assembly elections will be held on November 28 amid high security. The counting of votes will be held on December 11. The voting in Mizoram, where the Indian National Congress is in power since 2008, will be held in a single phase on Wednesday. The tenure of the 40-member Mizoram Assembly, expires on December 15, 2018. A total of 209 candidates are in the fray for the polls on Wednesday and the fate of the candidates would be decided by 7,70,395 voters which included 3,94,897 women. State's Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Ashish Kundra on Monday informed that he was "perfectly satisfied" with the arrangements. He added saying that preparations have been made for facilitating differently-abled people with ramps and wheelchairs.

This year, the Congress and the main Opposition, the MNF, have fielded 40 candidates each for the upcoming polls. Meanwhile, the BJP is contesting in 39 seats. Reports inform that the Zoram Peoples Movement (ZPM) is contesting in 35 seats. In Mizoram, the Congress has been in power since 2008 and is now eyeing a third consecutive term in the northeastern state. In 2013 assembly elections, the Congress had bagged 34 seats, while the Mizo National Front (MNF) had five and Mizoram People's Conference won one seat.

In the Northeast’s last Congress-ruled state of Mizoram, the BJP and Congress are leaving no stone unturned to woo voters. Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Aizawl and met BJP candidates and addressed a rally in southern Mizoram's Lunglei town. Meanwhile, BJP President Amit Shah addressed rallies in southern Mizoram's Lawngtlai town and northernmost Vairengte town.
