New Delhi, December 7: The Assembly elections in all the five poll-bound states are over and the news channels – in coordination with various research agencies – are all set to release the exit poll predictions on Friday. Though the predictions do not give the exact number of seat parties would win, but it provides an insight into the voting pattern. The Assembly elections for 40 constituencies in Mizoram took place on November 7, which recorded 80 percent poling. 7,70,395 voters took part in deciding the fate of 209 candidates – 15 women – contesting the polls. Among the voters, 3,94,897 were women and 32,545 were first timers. The Election Commission had set up 1,164 polling stations in eight districts of the state.

Both the ruling Congress and rival opposition party Mizo National Front are contesting in 40 seats, while BJP and Zoram Peoples' Movement (ZPM) are contesting in 39 seats. Other parties like People’s Representation for Identity and Status of Mizoram (PRISM) and Meghalaya-based National People’s Party (NPP) have also fielded considerable number of candidates.
In the Election manifesto, the ruling Congress had promised to provide free laptops to students who have cleared Class 10 and above if it returns to power in the state. Also, would continue with its New Land Use Policy (NLUP) for the farmers and New Economic Development Policy (NEDP) for unemployed youths. Aspiring to return back to power, the Mizo National Front in its manifesto has promised to introduce a village level citizens register. It also vowed to take steps against the illegal migrants. The party also promised for drawing up a scheme of rehabilitation and resettlement for the ‘martyrs’ and their families.
Under Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla, contesting for third straight term in the state, Congress won 34 seats in 2013 Assembly Elections, while former chief minister Pu Zoramthanga’s MNF won only five seats.
Though Thanhawla won the Mizoram Assembly elections in 2013 – winning 34 out of 40 seats, but the Congress’ vote share declined 13.4 percentage points across the northeast in 2014. It is to be known that since 1972, he has won the election to the assembly for the ninth time in 2013.
